Building the faux rockwork

Building the faux rockwork

‘Rockthemes International’, a British company specialising in faux rockwork were commissioned to build a rocky background that gently rises from the rear of the wildlife pond up to a high rocky outcrop at the side of the house.

A filtration system for the pond and pump were installed at the same time, and are hidden in a special chamber. The rocks were made from panels of concrete, and are reinforced with fibreglass.

The moulds were taken from real rock seams. They were linked together and sculpted with cement, and, when dry were hand painted to resemble aged, weathered stone.

Construction work began in the autumn of 2004.

Since then the material has also aged naturally over the time since it was installed, and now resembles real rock in appearance, colour and texture.
